Bilbao, the city you always wanted to visit

Bilbao is my hometown, and I've always lived there. It's located in the north of Spain, and it's the capital of Biscay. I think this city is more beautiful everyday, as the Bilbao has changed a lot in the last 50 years, but the worst things of living here is that it rains a lot!. Bilbao is also known for it's industry and it's cultural attractions such as the Guggenheim Museum.

There are lots of things to do in Bilbao, but the most famous are the museums. The Guggenheim Museum is one of them. However, you can also see the old part of the city, where there are churches, markets and shops. You can also go to Artxanda, where the view of Bilbao is fantastic.

It's possible to do some sport too. The beaches of the coast of Biscay are very good for surfing or for other water sports. Lots of surfers come here just to surf. Some of the beaches were you can practise these sports are Sopelana, Bakio or Laga. The sea is great at summer, when the weather is much better and you can have a swim. You can also try the "Herri Kirolak" or the typical basque sports, which have lasted for centuries.

Bilbao, is also very famous for the "pintxos" or snacks which are a great meal. Most of the bars in Bilbao prepare these curious aperitifs, which are very varied. If you want to try them you only have to go to the Plaza Nueva and go to any of the bars there. However there are lots of good restaurants and cooks. Maybe, some of these cooks are Karlos Arguiñano or Juan Mari Arzak.

Finally, if what you really like is architecture, you can visit lots of spectacular buildings. For example, the Arriaga theatre or the Chávarri palace are very interesting. We can also find more modern buildings, such as the Isozaki Gate, the Basque Health Department Headquarters or the tower of Iberdrola, which is being built at the moment.

So, if you are planning a trip, Bilbao is a great city, where you'll enjoy some holiday. Don't think it twice! Bilbao is waiting for you!

EDURNE'S HOMETOWN =)

My hometown, like the other´s one, is Bilbao.I am very proud of living here. In fact I am very proud of being Basque. Bilbao is a city in the North of Spain. Due to it's proximity to the sea, it´s climate is very wet. Winters are cold and Summers are mild. But no matter the season you ara, it always rains! So it is a good idea to carry always a "euritakoa" (umbrella).

Regarding gastronomy, in the Basque Country there are the best cooks of every spain. This is why our food is so well-known. we have locas plates like "bacalao a la vizcayna","merluza en salsa verde", "marmitako", "Txangurro"...but now, as a result of immigration, you can find plates from all over the world, from Argentina to Japan.

Bilbao is also known by it's variety of sports and great sportsmen and sportswomen. The most famous sports here, apart from football, are the cycling, oar, climbing and mountain-climbing. These athletes always have very important roles in the Olympics, especially in cycling. Apart from these sports, in recent years surfing has become very famous, although you must take the underground to go to the beach, it will not take you a lot of time. It is a very entertaining sport and there are many good surfers. Finally there also are local sports as "eskupilota", "cestapunta" and " harri jasoketa " that are only played in the Basque Country.

Finally, I will write about how the city has changed in a few years. What once were ship factories and ports, have turned now into walks with beautiful gardens and a views to the river and it's many bridges. One of these walks is the " walk of Uribitarte ". Next to the Guggenheim, attracts many tourists with it's numerous statues and beautiful palms. Just now they are constructing in this walk a building that is going to be the highest of Bilbao.

MY HOMETOWN: BILBAO

Bilbao is my hometown. It's been my hometown all my short life, so I have a lot of affection to it. It's situated in the Basque Country (north of Spain). We can find Bilbao as a small but interesting city because of its incredible development it has had for the last years. It has changed so much and it has became one of the most modern cities in Spain.

Bilbao is very known for its fantastic "Guggenheim" museum. It's located in a modern central area of Bilbao, very near from the "Nervion" river. We can enjoy ourselves watching all the different famous exhibitions it has during the year. We also have "Bellas Artes" museum, another important and popular museum of Bilbao, in which we find other exhibitions of Spanish artists.

As you must know, Bilbao is also so important because of its "pintxos": special little snacks you can taste in every restaurants of the city. For example you can find good restaurants in the old part of the city. However, there are good restaurants in other different areas.

Finally, we've to tell you about the local football team: Athletic Club. Its fans have an amazing passion for football and for their team. Athletic plays football matches in "San Mamés", known as the "Cathedral" because it's the oldest football pitch of Spain and it's so important in Spain.

We conclude saying that Bilbao is a fantastic city to visit; one of the most attractive ones you can find in Spain. Come and discover!

:) My home town

My home town is Bilbao,I have always lived here. It is in the north of spain. Bilbao has changed a lot in the last years, but is going to change a lot as the years goes on.The city has 353,168 inhabitants and is the industrially active part of Greater Bilbao, the zone in which almost half of the Basque Country’s population lives.

Bilbao is also famous because there is the "Guggenheim" museum. Is the most important structure of its time, Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum Bilbao recently celebrated a decade of extraordinary success on October 19, 2007. Million visitors go there to see the exhibitions every year. But it isnt the only think you can visit, there are more museum, or you can also visit the old part of the town,go shopping,go to the theater...

One of the most tipical food is the "Bacalao al pil-pil", if you like the fish you would love it. And "Carolina" and "Pastel vasco" are the tipical dessert, wich are fantastic. But know you can find restaurants from everywere, about the emigration.

Finally, I am going to talk about the football club of Bibao is the Athletik, maybe it isn´t the best team but it has the best fans. The football picht is called San Mames, are there are kown like the "lions". This is one of the oldest team in Spain. Their game is similar to the English one.

My Home Town: Bilbao visit it!

This is my home town: Bilbao. It's the biggest city of Basque Country, it has 353,168 inhabitants, so as you can supose it's an exciting city. I think people here brings bilbao in his heart, they are very influenced by the nationalism movement of the Basque Country. That's why the local football team Athletic Club is well known because of its phylosofy, and it's fans are meant to be the best of all Spain. Bilbao's big week which is the main festival of the city attracts almost 100,000 people each year, is a huge party symbolized by "Marijaia" a traditional character of this event.

Last twenty years have been very succesfull for culture in Bilbao. The Calatrava Bridge orthe or the Euskalduna Palace are two of the most famous contemporany buildings of Bilbao, but the jewel of Bilbao's crown is the Guggenheim museum. Designed by the famous architec Franz Ghery and made of glass, titanium and limestone it's the main objective of turists.

Deusto university is the best education centre of bilbao, it's internationaly famous because the high level of his commercial department wich is in the top ten commercial grades of all europe.
Its directed by the jesuits company, that also has a well known school in city's centre.

Since 2001 immigration in Bilbao has reached the 2 % of the total population. Although it has changed Bilbao's culture, it contrasts with the spanish media wich is arund the 11%. Nowadays eating in a chinese restaurant or in a mexican one is a common thing, but it hasn´t changed Bilbao's main traditions.

PATRITOWN! a good place for living:)

Bilbao is my hometown, the biggest city in the Basque Country and the largest one in Bizkaia. I have lived here since I was born. I live in Deusto, a neighbourhood of the city. It´s placed in one side of the river Nervion joined to the other side of the city by many bridges designed by different famous architects, as Calatrava.

If we talk about food we can say that we have some plates that are just prepared here, like "bacalao a la vizcaina", "pastel vasco", "talo" or a cake called "carolina". But in recent years, due to the immigration, restaurants of different kinds of food have been opened, offering us food of all over the world. So if you don´t like our food just try in them, but you should know that the Basque Country is well-known because of its renowned cooks!!

My neighbourhood has a very famous and important University, the University of Deusto. It´s a private university where you can study from medicine to law. But a word of warning: this is a very demanding place. The building is a construction built more than a hundred years ago, it´s a historic place.

Finally, and not less important, I'm going to write about the soul of Bilbao. Of course, San Mames, the football pitch. THAT is a historic place too!The legend says that San Mames was a man that had been thrown to the lions, that's why the players of the team are called "lions". Further more, the Athletic is the second oldest football team in Spain. It's game and pitch is very similar to English ones because Athletic was created by an English man.

To sum up, Bilbao is a city where you can confortably live, it has got everything you need!

My Town

Bilbao is my home town. It is the largest city in Biscay. In fact, it has more than 350,000 inhabitants and nearly 1 million people live in the metropolitan area. Historically, it has been important because of the heavy industry. Unfortunately, that´s why the city was thought to be a dark place. But now, the corporation is trying to regenerate it.
The Guggenheim museum is the symbol of that regeneration.

Since the beginnig of the XXI century Bilbao has developed its tourism. Consequently, the number of visitors has rosen a lot. The area of Bilbao is well known for the gastronomy, actually many chefs were born there.

In the 50s and 60s there was a lot of immigration from central and southern spaniards who came in order to find a job in the prosperopus Bilbao. At the moment people fom Asia, America and Eastern Europe are coming to my town. Cultures from all over the world coexist in Bilbao with no problem. This cosmopolitan city offers several cultural events such as an opera season or many art exhibitios in both Guggenheim and `Bellas Artes´museums.
